The Khmer treasures
In the past, the territory of today's Cambodia was inhabited by the Khmer people. We owe it to him most of the attractions in this part of Asia. Trips to Cambodia are normally focused around the Angkor temple complex. It has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The complex was built at the end of the 8th century, during the reign of King Khmer Jayavarman II, who decided to move to this area the capital of the kingdom. Over the next hundreds of years, the successors of the great king built their temples here - as a result, a huge complex of temple buildings and chapels was built over an area of more than 200 km2. Centuries ago, Angkor was undoubtedly one of the greatest, richest and most magnificent cities not only in Asia, but also in the whole world. To this day you can still see its enormity, although the temples did not resist the passage of time. Tourists who usually arrive in Angkor Wat at dawn start their visit with Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Walking along the avenues guarded by statues of demons and good spirits, you get to the central place of the complex, i.e. the temple of Bayon. Outside the city walls lies Ta Prohm, a temple discovered in the nineteenth century, overgrown with gigantic trees.
Beautiful views of the temple can be admired from the terrace of elephants or the terrace of the King of Lepers, where you can also admire the wall decorations. In total there are almost half a thousand temples in Angkor. It is a masterpiece of architecture and a pearl of Khmer art.
